After a great week at RSNA 2018 in Chicago, we want to share some of the top trends and takeaways from the show. The Glassbeam booth was buzzing throughout the five-day show. We discussed the most relevant topics and challenges for radiology technicians and clinical engineering departments with our many booth visitors.
Overarching challenges imaging leaders want to tackle in 2019 include implementing AI and Machine Learning technology to reduce patient revisits, avoid reschedules and explore ways to understand how their medical modalities are utilized.
Collectively, a core concern among our booth visitors was how to leverage data science technologies that extract data from diverse sources of CMMS, machine logs and CRM data to reduce imaging equipment maintenance costs and improve patient care outcomes. Machine data analytics and data science show incredible promise in overcoming the challenges radiology departments face, as well as meeting the vision of a holistic, central digital diagnostic data hub that RSNA president Dr. Vijay M. RSNA Highlights: Glassbeam Launches Ultrasound and Utilization Analytic Offerings
We recently partnered with RENOVO SOLUTIONS to release a joint solution for service and utilization analytics for ultrasound equipment. The solution leverages our AI-powered machine data analytics to reduce imaging equipment downtime, identify error patterns, and provide granular utilization information about the number, type and length of procedures – which can be compared by facility and user.
At RSNA, we also announced a partnership with EQ2, a leading CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) vendor for the healthcare market, to integrate Glassbeam’s machine data insights into EQ2’s HEMS® (Hospital Equipment Management System) and provide its customers with insights into medical device uptime and utilization analytics. As connected machines become pervasive in healthcare, insights from advanced analytics will help organizations make more strategic day-to-day operational and long-term capital expenditure decisions.
Both partnerships were hot topics of conversation and very well received by RSNA attendees as validation to the needs of the market and our approach.

Four Trends and Takeaways From RSNA 2018
1. Separating True AI Innovation from Hype – From use cases in image diagnoses to equipment utilization analytics, AI was without a doubt one of the hottest topics at RSNA 2018 and is poised to disrupt an advance the current practices of radiology departments. The providers and decision-makers that we heard from and spoke with at RSNA were in agreement: AI needs to be significantly more efficient than what we can do as humans, reduce costs and enhance patient care outcomes in order to be worth the investment.
2. Need for Compliance and Stronger Cybersecurity – RSNA attendees from all backgrounds – healthcare organizations, OEMs and third parties – agree that cybersecurity for medical devices and the servicing of medical devices needs to be stronger and standardized. Securing patients’ data for HIPAA compliance is a challenging but necessary step in this process.
3. Increasing Emphasis on Patient Advocacy – In “Patient advocate lecture may be a first ever at RSNA,” HealthCare Business News wrote that increasing patient satisfaction works best as a commitment rather than a matter of compliance. Messages from the panel discussion were well received by RSNA attendees, and we are firm believers in patient advocacy at Glassbeam. In fact, our solution can enhance both patient experience and patient satisfaction by turning unplanned downtime into planned downtime during non-business hours, ensuring appointments run as scheduled and avoiding frustrating reschedules.
4. Continued Focus on Outcome-Based Healthcare – Improving operational efficiencies is the first step in the quest to increase patient satisfaction. Increasingly, healthcare organizations are realizing the power of advanced data analytics to track equipment utilization, referrals from physicians, types of procedures and more, in order to optimize use of scarce, expensive assets.
